Ten Commandments for Success as Crew
1) Always muck in. If your job is done, help out elsewhere.
2) Don’t grumble. Complaints have a ripple effect. They spread discontent. If you have a problem, discuss it with the person who would deal best with it and be done with it.
3) Don’t gossip to crew or guests. It always comes back to haunt you. The yachting community is a small one and it’s close knit. Everybody knows everybody.
4) Stay out of on-board politics.
5) Think twice before revealing your ambitions with other crew members. Some of them in positions of authority can be a little insecure. They may see others as a threat to their job security.
6) Don’t ever be drunk or stoned on duty.
7) Remember who owns the boat. One of the biggest complaints among owners is arriving onboard their own yacht and not feeling welcome.
8) Always be well groomed and dressed, particularly with guests on board.
9) Always give adequate notice for resignation so that you can go from one vessel to the next leaving on the best possible terms. You never know when you might need a good reference.
10) Don’t screw the crew. (In any sense of the word!)
