You've found the job, you're onboard, your bank balance is starting to look perky, now you've just got to keep the job.
Here are 5 signs of trouble:
- Can you easily be replaced? If you dissappeared today would you be missed? Although many of us have an over inflated sense of importance when it comes to our jobs most of us are easily replaced but some with more ease than others. Make sure your skills or attitude become valued.
- Do you get on with the rest of the crew? Take a real look at your relationship with the rest of the crew. If you tend to gossip, stir trouble or influence crew in a negative way you could be off the boat. Team players are excellent crewmembers.
- Has your work load decreased for no apparent reason? It maybe that others or having to take on your work to ensure the job is done to the required standard. If suddenly you find yourself no longer significantly busy it might be worthwhile looking at the standard of your work.
- Do you read the financial times? Or does someone else on the boat? These vessels are frequently owned by the extremely wealthy and while rare for some their money can vanish overnight and the first thing you hear about it is when you are chucked off the yacht without pay. It's an idea to keep abreast of the financial and political dealings of the boats owner.
- Do you browse the boat for sale columns? It can be a shock when you see your vessel lurking in amongst the other yachts that are for sale too. Find out where you stand if the boat is sold and how secure your position is. Some owners give crew six months dismissal bonus, some simply wave goodbye.
