Crew Uniforms

When joining the yacht, crew should be issued with two or three sets of uniforms. These will be charter uniform, owner uniform and casual uniform. Cold and wet weather gear should also be included. This usually comprises of a good quality fleece lined jacket/coat, matching the standard crew uniform colour scheme. You should also have a complete set of all-weather gear, consisting of trousers and hooded jacket/coat that are as waterproof as possible.
A standard uniform generally consists of shorts and polo/airtex shirts. A stewardess may be required to wear a skirt and a chef, his traditional whites. Some owners will be very draconian when it comes to uniforms, insisting that the epaulettes of rank be worn at all times and that the hierarchy of crew must be made clear, others will not really care one way or another.

Owner versus Charter Uniform

These uniforms may not differ hugely from each other. Some owners prefer to have a separate uniform for crew to wear when the yacht has charter guests. The differences may be small.
One yacht, for example, had the crew dressed in navy when stood down (with no guests), green and white when under charter and pure white when the owner was on board.

Casual Uniform

This uniform is usually the kit that has been downgraded from what is worn by crew when under charter and/or for owners. It may either have become faded and worn or styles may have changed slightly. Casual uniform is usually worn when stood down without guests or owners and crew are simply engaged in the day to day running and maintenance of the yacht.

Yachts seem to follow a pretty standard code of dress. Colours will vary a little from yacht to yacht but generally the style remains the same. Uniforms can be designated according to the position held. When on charter or with guests on board you may be required to wear a cotton shirt with epaulettes on the shoulder, indicating your position on board. The yacht will provide the actual uniform. You are not expected to contribute to this cost in any way.
