A yacht is a symbol of affluence and ultimate luxury, and naturally, they are enjoyed by the billionaires of the world. The fact is, the wealth a person has amassed is often equated in terms of opulence and luxury that his yacht can offer. That's why the rich and the famous want to own these unique vessels.
Here are a few of the most famous yachts in the world.
The Golden Star
Recognized as the most majestic and largest of the yachts built till now, the Golden Star, which is also often called the Platinum Star, is no doubt a sight to behold. This magnificent floating palace measures 160 meters, and is currently owned by the Sheikh of Dubai.
It was commissioned initially by Prince Jefry Bolkiah of Brunei in 1996. However, the construction work of this luxury vessel was brought to a screeching halt soon after, as the Prince sadly ran out of money. For two long years, the structure stood in a German dry dock, till it was spotted by the Crown Prince of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum. The colossal project was eventually taken over by him and the Golden Star was finally launched in Dubai in 2006. Even though the Sheikh prefers to call his lovely vessel the Platinum Star, people sensing the hush-hush closely linked to the world's longest yacht, prefer to address is simply as "The Dubai".
Sunflower
Measuring 155 meters, the Sunflower is considered the world's second largest yacht, and also the youngest one. Even though it was built in Germany, the yacht has all the features of an Arabian vessel - it has a triple mast and a double funnel. However, the fate of its ownership is still hanging in the balance. The grapevine however predicts that she will be the successor to the 25-year old Omani Royal Yacht Al Said.
Prince Abdul Aziz
This beautiful vessel that was built in 1984 is the world's third largest yacht. Built for the King of Saudi Arabia, Prince Abdul Aziz roamed the seven seas as the world's largest yacht till the title went over to its keenest rival, the Golden/Platinum Star. She needs 65 crew members to set sail. Those who have seen it say that it looks more like a cruise ship than a privately-owned luxury yacht.
Al Salamah
Owned by the Saudi Defense Minister, the 139-meter luxury yacht is surrounded by mystery and ambiguity ever since it was launched. It has a private cinema hall and Jacuzzis in most of her bathrooms. But that's not all. The Al Salamah has an indoor swimming pool that is covered by a detachable glass roof that provides protection against the strong Middle East Sun.
