About Superyachts

Many people dream of getting a job on a yacht - without really knowing what it entails. What is a superyacht? Some people think they are cruise liners. Some people think they are simply big yachts but no different from any other yacht apart from size. They're wrong.

Superyachts are in a different world and if you'd like a job on one it's a good idea to start at the beginning and understand what they are.

What Will You Find on Board a Superyacht?

Besides the more obvious rooms and appointments like the bedrooms (cabins), dining rooms (dining saloon), kitchen (galley), bathrooms etc you will find some of the following on board.

The Engine Room
Where the engine is housed!

Lazzarrette
These are useful storage facilities that vary in size and are usually aft and near the engine room. Depending on the size of the vessel all manner of things are stored in Lazzarettes from fenders to tenders.

The Wheel house
Also known as the bridge or pilot house this is where most of work in terms of steering the boat is done. Much of the boats navigational equipment will be found here as well security electronics, fire and safety controls and alarms, communications and control panels.

The Decks:

Aft Deck, forward deck, top deck, mid deck, lower decks… The top deck is obviously the deck on top. Traditionally this is the deck where all the sun loungers are spread out; you can find jacuzzis, hot tubs and bars on this deck. You may also find the heli-pad situated up on the top deck.
The aft deck is the deck at the back of yacht on the level that you would walk onto from shore. The forward deck is the deck at the front of the yacht, the bow. How many decks you have in the middle will depend on the size of the yacht and the design.
You may also find a bathing platform aft below or part of the transom. A transom is the bit at the back (the stern) of the yacht where the yacht’s name is usually written.

The aft deck is one of the favourite deck areas for dining. Situated near the bathing platform and near the passerelle it is very convenient, it is also frequently sheltered from the stronger breezes when anchored off as the yacht always swings so her prow is into the wind. This means the after decks are comparatively sheltered.

Big Yachts
On very big yachts you may also find some or all of the below:

  • Library
  • Cinema
  • Sauna
  • Gym
  • Spa
  • Swimming pool
  • Basket ball court
  • Submarine
  • Training rooms
  • Missile and defense storage
  • Helipad etc etc
